Cecil deserves to be liked. We ought to feel sorry for him as an unfortunate spurned lover. I got the impression that Forster rather liked him as a character.
I think Forster liked Cecil in the same way that he likes the chap in "Where Angels..." (who is thinly disguised Forster combined with a friend, but not H.O.Meredith)
